Maya Beach, here we come....

I can't believe it has been 3 1/2 years since we bought our two lots in Maya Beach. We came to Belize in September 2005 with a dream to find our retirement place in the Caribbean.

The plan was to return to Florida, sell our home, sell our stuff, pack the rest and move to Placencia Belize. We figured it would take about 4 -5 months to accomplish that goal, and we were fired up and ready to rock and roll. We were soooooooooo wrong. Thanks to the housing market back in the states, it was March of 2008 before we could make that happen.

We took a huge beating on our house, We followed the price into the same downward spiral the rest of the US housing market was facing. We were loosing site of our Belizean dream. We decided a pro-active approach was needed to regain our dream and get the heck out of Dodge.

We came down here at Christmas 2007 to renew the dream. While visiting some friends who live here, we were given the pleasure of house sitting their house and pets while they took a much needed trip back to the states. While staying there, we got a real glimpse of day to day life living here in Belize. Once again, we were hooked.

With even more enthusiasm than before, we decided we could drop the price of the house (again) and get down and dirty with that price. What happened next was a total blur, but before I forget it completely, I will try to tell the story without getting too verbose.

We dropped the price on a Thursday in the 2nd week of February. Sunday we were under contract. Two estate sales, some Craig's List liquidation, and some really fast packing, crating and shipping, we were gone by March 6th. Whew....that fast.

With a cross country trip to Colorado in our 1999 GMC Jimmy with 2 dogs and a butt load of stuff, Bob picked up his son, Dagan and headed for a road trip to Belize. I opted to fly, via North Carolina where I could say goodbyes to some of the grand kids and daughter Meaghan, to Belize.

I'll never forget, as long as I live, that feeling when I got off the plane in Placencia. The feeling of being home. Wow...that was really incredible. Bob and Dagan, on the other hand, had quite an adventure driving through Mexico in less that 48 hours (really) to arrive at the border Easter weekend....no one there to admit the boys into the country. But, there are always ways....and they eventually got here, no problemo. One day, that journey may be written about, but suffice it to say, Bob's new nickname of "Leadfoot Rojo" suits him, don't you think?

So now we are here, and building our house. I will post more on that later. I just wanted to get this blog started before I forget the events. We have so many stories to share, so come on along on our adventures here as our dreams are coming true.
